Hooray! We made it to another calendar year. As we plan for the days ahead, we should also look at the days that are now behind us. What has changed? Was it for better or worse? There is always progress to be made as a society, and we all play a crucial role. Here are 10 important subjects that we should focus on in 2024 and beyond:

1. Economic Equality

2024 is the year to spotlight economic justice. Policies promoting fair wages, bridging income gaps, and supporting small businesses should headline the agenda, fostering an economy that works for everyone. We have been heading in a direction that is not promising for the average American. The nations most important contributors often go unnoticed, all while having to think about bills when at work.

2. Universal Healthcare Access

Healthcare is not a privilege but a right. No person should have to debate going somewhere for care. It is morally wrong to deny someone treatment because of finances or the lack of an insurance card. This year demands a commitment to universal healthcare, ensuring equitable access to medical services and resources for all, leaving no one behind.

3. Climate Action Cannot Wait

The climate clock is ticking, and 2024 is the time to act. To be clear, Earth will be fine. It has seen worse. However, we as a human race are the ones that have to worry. Ambitious plans for sustainable practices, clean energy adoption, and global collaboration must become the driving force to address the climate crisis. Stop flying your private jet from Orlando to Miami. It’s a short drive.

4. Dismantling Systemic Injustices

Humans are the smartest animals that have ever existed. We have created extraordinarily complex and efficient systems. But we cannot seem to grasp the simple concept that all law abiding citizens shall be treated equal.

Systemic biases need a reckoning. In 2024, it’s imperative to identify and rectify discriminatory structures within institutions, ensuring a fair and just society for every individual, regardless of background.

5. Transparency and Anti-Corruption Measures

Trust is the currency of a thriving society (how are we doing on that?). Implementing robust measures for transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption initiatives is vital to rebuild and maintain public trust in institutions. Major problems like the misuse of funds, insider trading and abuse of power need immediate attention.

6. Technology for All

The digital divide must be closed. In 2024, efforts to bridge the gap between technology haves and have-nots should be prioritized, ensuring that everyone can benefit from the opportunities of the digital age. It is difficult to be a useful member of society without technology nowadays, but always remember that there are far more important skills to know as well (ask if you do not know).

7. Education Revolution

Revamping education is a linchpin for societal progress. This year calls for adaptable and inclusive educational systems, focusing on digital literacy, critical thinking, and preparing students for a rapidly changing world. We do not need to teach children gender reassignment, creationism or other subjects that are not meant for an undeveloped brain.

8. Racial and Social Equity

The fight against racial and social inequalities needs to intensify in 2024. Logical advocacy for policies that dismantle systemic racism, promote diversity, and create inclusive environments should be at the forefront of the social change agenda. Individuals should explore these topics and understand them, because we as individuals can have an impact on these global issues.

9. Mental Health Awareness and Support

The silent pandemic of mental health deserves attention. It is dramatically worse due to our recent global pandemic. Social change in 2024 should entail destigmatizing mental health, promoting awareness, and ensuring accessible mental health support services for all. It has made rapid progress in the last decade, but there is always more to be made.

10. Grassroots Movements and Civic Engagement

The power of the people cannot and should not be underestimated. In 2024, encouraging and supporting grassroots movements, as well as fostering civic engagement, empowers individuals to actively shape the social change they want to see. Individuals brought together hold a powerful voice, and is a sure way for change.

Each of these ten points describe the dire need for transformation. Together, they create a roadmap for a more just, equitable, and sustainable future. As we navigate the complexities of this new year, let’s embrace these crucial aspects of social change, working collectively to build a better tomorrow for all.
